Field Trip or should I say Forest Trip

On Sunday April 7th, FUN had the pleasure of touring Forested (http://www.forested.us/ ) under the guidance of our food forest experts, Ronnie (a founder and director of FUN) and Christine. Forested is a ten-acre research forest garden, located in the middle of suburbia. Its practices will serve as the foundation for the food forests we plan to install on each FUN site.

Food Forests are ecologically savy food producers, giving us fruit, nuts, berries, herbs, and mushrooms in a sustainable way. Forested is a thriving, growing agroforest, proving that food production can be successful with limited impact on the environment. It is a perfect example of what can be accomplished with food cultivation when working with the native ecosystem instead of against it…the diversity and abundance of edibles was amazing.

FUN is excited about establishing food forests at each of its sites and putting into practice the concepts of permaculture. Thank you Forested for the very educational tour!

Learning is fun and FUN is Always Learning

We are excited about sharing our knowledge. FUN will promote education through hands-on learning, workshops, field trips, and volunteer projects. Ronnie, FUN’s expert on permaculture and farmer extraordinaire, presented a workshop at Rooting DC (https://www.rootingdc.org) this February. We will endeavor to continually educate ourselves, to expand our knowledge base and improve our techniques, in an effort to provide an abundant yield of produce each year.

FUN looks forward to extolling the benefits of healthy food options through social media, guided workshops, and food tastings. We hope to introduce you to a food or 2 that you haven’t tried before. Have you ever tasted a pawpaw fruit? They are native to this area and quite delicious

Hello and Welcome to the first post on our newly planted website!

We are Food Uniting Neighbors,
yes that's right, we're FUN!

We are a dedicated group of volunteers who would like to establish food forests and annual vegetable gardens on unused land in the diverse, suburban community in which we reside.

All food we harvest from our sites will be donated to food banks, food pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelters - any food provider in the local area that can use the fresh produce themselves in preparing free meals  or distribute the fresh produce to those in need.

We have just broken ground on this endeavor, so bear with us as this website is under construction.

We are excited to embark on this new adventure. We can't wait to get started and get our hands dirty.

Join us…it’s FUN!
